Week 6 in Mrs. A Rod's Class
Hello, friends!
Another week has passed and it went by so quickly!
On Monday, I walked in and saw this amazing view of our new school. It was a beautiful way to start the week.
We started reading Honey, Honey, Lion for our Rooted in Reading this week. We don't have the book and we don't really have an extensive library anymore, so we watched a read aloud version on YouTube. We learned about the CL blend as well as short o sound. The kids are really loving Rooted in Reading. It's a lot of copies (TBH) but its worth it. I love feeling so prepared every week.
We have been working on the commutative property of addition for the last week and continued this week. They are really getting it (thank goodness). It's usually pretty tricky, so I'm happy about that. We've been using Deanna Jump's Guiding Firsties Math sets and they've been awesome.
I started parent teacher conferences this week, which has been difficult with most of my data at my old classroom. Luckily, I put some data in my computer and we always share about how they're doing on the I-Station tests. Do your students do I-Station as well? What do you think about it?
I have a student who is pretty much a second grader. His mom is wanting him to be SUPER challenged at school and I have a hard time with the kids that need a challenge, so I am hoping you can give me some tips. What do you do with the students that need extra challenges at school? I would love to hear from you here or on Instagram! (@learningandlovingit) I always do what I can, but I'd love to hear some fresh ideas!
On Wednesday, I had a parent donate some books, educational games, and even some things off of my Amazon wish list! It was the sweetest thing ever. They even brought lots of toys from fast food places so that I could make a new and improved treasure box! The kids were SO EXCITED!! I have now dedicated a drawer to treasure box. Another parent bought us 3 books from our wish list and I am so excited to read them this week! I am always grateful for the parents and their generosity.
So, if you know me at all, I am alllll about building relationships in the classroom. I love this time of the year because you have gotten (is that a word?) to know your students and they know you. You are building those bonds and they will want to do anything to make you happy! YAY! (Let's see how they are in April...) I love when they start wanting to dress like you or wear certain things they know you'll like. They are just the sweetest little things...
In the first pic, we are matching with our Mickey and Minnie shoes. The second pic, she wore a pineapple shirt because she knows my love of all things pineapple. They are just too cute and sweet. It always warms my heart that they notice these things and want to show me.
Isn't teaching the best? The kids seriously make everything worth it. I know, it's not always perfect in the classroom, but these little moments are everything.
Soooo, Saturday. I had been avoiding my "old" school because it's so overwhelming to think about getting things out of there and bringing it over to my new school. We finally made it in today and I had a breakdown. I am terrible when I feel overwhelmed. My husband made me take a break and we left for a while and of course got a Sonic drink. We finally went back and got to work. I pulled down almost everything from my walls. I got some books. I grabbed all the glue sticks I could. It's now all in my garage. We didn't take EVERYTHING, but we took enough for it to feel a little less overwhelming later. Thank God for my husband and how he never, ever complains about helping me.
I am so sorry I keep talking about this move, but it is MAJOR in my life right now. I know every one around me wants to act like it's all okay and that we're doing just fine, but it's hard, y'all. It's hard every day. It's so weird to just be uprooted from one day to the next and just carry on like normal. We need to be strong for the parents and kids, but geez, it's rough. It will get better, but the truth is, I miss my old room. I miss my closet. I miss having a sink. I miss having a bathroom in the room. I miss having space. I miss having shelves. I miss having two trashcans. I miss having a playground for the kids. I miss not having to go up flights of stairs to make a copy. I miss having a printer in the hallway. I miss printing in general. I know, I know, I need to get over it. I am totally thankful to whoever was in my new classroom that was displaced as well. It is the new normal and we will deal. I just had to vent and I'm gonna stop complaining, someday. :)
Thank you for all of your amazing messages and offers to help. Thank you for your support and encouragement. You all are so awesome. You all are truly friends and I appreciate you all. Thank you, thank you, thank you!
